While cremation urns are the most common form of storage for ashes, some people may seek out different ways to memorialize their cremated loved ones. A great method to honor a lost loved one and to keep them close to you always is through cremation jewelry. After scattering or storing the majority of someone’s ashes, families often choose to keep a small portion of ashes for themselves to carry their loved one within a cremation pendant or cremation bracelet bead.
Ashes jewelry is created with a small compartment that allows for a portion of ashes or personal mementos (lock of hair, sand/soil from scattering/burial site, dried flower petals, etc.) to be stored, creating a handheld memorial of a loved one. Jewelry to hold ashes offers the chance to always keep a loved one close in a subtle way, so love and grief may be expressed without drawing too much attention to the purpose behind the jewelry piece. Cremation jewelry remains quite popular today due to the privacy granted to its wearer, mourning a loved one can be a very intense process.

Endless Choices in Human Ashes Jewelry
GetUrns has a wide variety of cremation jewelry in the form of cremation pendants, cremation bracelet beads, and even matching earrings for a complete set. Our vast portfolio of cremation jewelry gives people the opportunity to pick an item which suits anyone’s personality.
Included with most pieces of ashes jewelry is a filling kit which is made to assist the process of placing cremains or mementos inside of the piece. If filling the cremation jewelry is too emotionally difficult, consider calling a local funeral home or crematory. Funeral professionals may be able to fill the piece for free or a small fee.
How Do I Open My Pendant/Bracelet?
Please carefully read the description of the item you purchased. Some are opened by twisting a screw or ball located on the piece.
Most cremation jewelry comes with a filling kit; using this and a small flat head screwdriver or allen key, first unscrew the small threaded screw located on the piece.
- Insert a pinch of ashes into the pendant/bead using the spoon/toothpick/funnel provided.
- Close the piece once more, sealing it with a glue or epoxy if desired.
Now That It’s Filled, I Can’t Close the Cremation Pendant/Bead.
Please look for a few things:
- Make sure the screw can be inserted all the way into the piece. If not, this means there are too many ashes inside.
- Please ensure the screw is tightened straight into the cavity hole using the provided allen key. If it is tilted even slightly it will not insert all the way and lay flush.
How Do I Care for Cremation Jewelry for Ashes?
You must be incredibly careful with the chemicals used for cleaning; many commercial cleaners cause varying degrees of harm to cremation jewelry. Bleach or bleach base products will darken a sterling silver piece and can completely dissolve solid gold if left to soak long enough.
A good rule of thumb for all jewelry metals is to simply give a good rubbing with dry, lint free cloth, 1-2 times a month. This will remove any built-up oils or grime and expose the natural luster of the pendant or bead. While there are plenty of silver or gold soaks for you to use, we do not personally recommend any of these be used since the liquid could compromise the piece and damage the remnants placed inside.
Does The Pendant/Bead I Ordered Automatically Come With A Chain/Bracelet?
LoveUrns pendants always come with a chain, simply lift the gray flap inside the pendant box and the chain will be resting there.
- Madelyn pendants come with a black satin cord.
- Cremation beads do not come with the bracelet; those must be purchased separately.
Can You Get Cremation Jewelry Wet?
As tempting as it may be to wear your gold vermeil or sterling silver cremation jewelry day in and out, it’s unwise to do so while showering, swimming, or exercising-the sweat and chemicals will hurt the piece, regardless of the metal type.
You must also take care to not allow any moisture to enter the chamber and interfere with the physical remnant of your loved one - whether the contents are ashes or a lock of hair. Submerging any cremation jewelry in water can introduce humidity inside, potentially disturbing your loved one inside.
Can Cremation Jewelry Be Engraved?
GetUrns does not offer engraving on any cremation jewelry. If interested, we recommend sourcing jewelers in your area who offer engraving and have them inspect the piece to see if engraving is possible.
